Newton Heath
Newton Heath TMD is a traction maintenance depot in Newton Heath, Manchester, at the Calder Valley Line’s junction.
In 2018 RMTS was commissioned to remove, store and then relocate a wheel lathe from a London depot designated to be closed to make way for a new Crossrail Hub depot. Work commenced in 2018 with the lathe’s removal, which then needed to be stored until a new location was assigned.
In August 2020, RMTS was given the green light by Northern Trains to install the lathe at Newton Heath’s TMD traction maintenance depot in Manchester.
Programme of works included:
- Full removal of Wheel Lathe from London depot
- Storage of machine
- Provision of lifting machinery and spider crane for both takedown and relocation
- Installation of relocated wheel lathe
- Commissioning of the machine at the new location
- Full training on the wheel lathe at the new location
